GIS-121 Working with labels

I learned a lot with this lab- like do not convert your labels to annotation until AFTER you have printed your map at least once and made all major changes to your labels that you would like to. Because once it has been converted, it's more time consuming to make the same changes (or I just haven't figured out how yet. :) ) I've learned that you can spend many hours just getting your labels "just so" and then look at it later and decide there are more changes that need to be made. I'm sure that once I start looking at everyone's maps, I will see tons of things that I will wish I had thought to do. So, I hope you enjoy, maybe see something you like. Our first project. I think this is going to be a lot of fun. There is definitely a wide variety of ways that this project could be done. It will be interesting to see other's take on it.

GIS 121- First Class

Ok, my brain is tired. Trying to remember how to do all that stuff was tough. I remembered more than I thought I would. Searching for topics in help also worked well :) I felt a little intimidated when I found out the backgrounds of the rest of the class. I had to ask myself what in the world I was doing in the midst of these people. But I have been able to use some of what I have learned at work, so I can't complain. It's always edifying when I can use what I've acquired in the GIS classes again in a different situation than just the classroom.

I'm looking forward to learning more. This sounds like the fun class of the three. I'm glad I saved it until last.

Sea Floor mapping

Myrtle Beach Sea Floor map

This is very neat to me. The mapping of the sea floor is becoming more and more important in recent years it seems like. I'm hearing about it more and more and how different countries are mapping the waters off their coasts- the waters under the North Pole have been mapped and more. The ships that are mapping the sea floor use a lot of the same techniques and instruments that are used to map land with the addition of other instruments like those that look for the seismic reflection- basically what kind of forms are under all that sand.
